Here's the Sort of Moron Who's Running FEMA
It turns out that the guy the Bush administration placed in charge of FEMA was Mike Brown. His last job was 11 years at an organization that oversees horse shows. Arabian horses. I shit you not. He was fired from it.
In personal matters, I'm regretting taking this scientific computing class. It's really ugly, nasty applied math that's already over my head in the second week.
My physical oceanography class looks like it's going to be way too easy, on the other hand, owing to the fact that it's a core course for all marine sciences students, so most of the other people in it are biologists or chemists, not physicists.

I was listening to NPR when a reporter was at the regretable scene at the Convention Center. He reported 2000 people living in horrid conditions there. This report was followed by an interview with Brown (Bush called him "Brownie" in a speech). When pushed by the interviewer with the repeated question "WHEN can these people expect help - in hours? Days? How long?" ole Brownie said "FEMA cannot react to hearsay."
This is when the interviewer got angry and defended his reporter as a seasoned professional that has reported accurately on many crises.
Later, I heard that Brown said he hadn't heard about the Center until he heard about it on the RADIO! So I guess I (and the rest of the afternoon NPR audience) got to hear how FEMA was "notified" of the victims there.
Boy, doesn't it make you feel safe?
Let's hope California (the world's 5th largest economy or thereabouts) has its own resources ready to go for the inevitable LA quake! And I hope all the resources aren't collected together in LA!!
The thing is, I understand there are a lot of morons at high levels of the government due to political patronage. But one might have thought that after 9/11 FEMA would be an exception.
There are logistics experts from the military who could do a very good job. They're used to running enormous operations, and feeding and sheltering large numbers of people in adverse circumstances. They would know how to work well with federal troops. And the military retires them young, so there are a lot of them sitting around without much else to do.
But instead we get this waste of oxygen. The guy got into FEMA four years ago as the deputy director (nothing like starting at the top) because he was the college roommate of the guy Bush originally picked, who subsequently quit. He was available because he had mismanaged the Arabian horse registry to the point that he was fired and it went out of business.
This idiot should be slowly strangled while his family watches.
