From the Blinding Glimpse of the Obvious department...

Apparently this came as news to somebody, somewhere.

George Takei, 'Trek's' Sulu: I'm gay

I have a feeling like when they announce that some old celebrity has died when I didn't even know he was still alive.

Update: Here's the .wav file mentioned in the comments. Google rocks.

I've been trying to think of some kind of witty "Sulu is gay" pun, but I've got nothing. His character is so non-memorable (plus I didn't watch a lot of old gen Star Trek). The only Sulu line I know is from ST 6 (I think): "Target that explosion and fire!" but that's lame. And they didn't have any kind of special future-space-closets on the Enterprise for him to come out of.

You're right -- they didn't give the guy much to do.

I did a search on the web for Sulu quotes, and the best I could come up with were "Don't call me Tiny." from The Search for Spock and "Nice to see you in action one more time, Captain Kirk" from ST VI and "Sulu, put that thing away" (unattributed).

According to the movie "Trekkies" there is a whole subculture of people who write explicit stories about Star Trek characters, mostly involving Kirk and Spock. I don't even want to know about that. I do remember an audio file I found years ago that edited together dialog from the TV series to make it sound like Spock was sodomizing Kirk. It was pretty hilarious.
